I took this image yesterday morning and what a contrast from Sunny weather we had in France. Cold, drizzling rain and overcast, yep welcome home to England!

French Trip.

French holiday break didn’t go to plan. First problem was the Gas for heating hadn’t been delivered, so no hot water or shower at the house. OK we can live with that, we can still boil a kettle. Following morning making plans for our day the gardener arrived. He asked could I move the car, he was wanting to use his petrol strimmer behind where my car was parked by the house. Now my French isn’t very good, the wife is a little better but the gardener English is even worse, so communications where conducted via Google Translate app on my phone …not ideal. I moved the car and started to get my gear ready when there was a knock at the door. Gardener again rattling away in French and walks off to the back of the house. Thinking he was having trouble starting the ride-on mower, I followed him to see his strimmer had kicked up a stone and hit the car, Noooo!

He was very apologetic and I am insured. So a days shooting lost, with ringing insurance and waiting. Next morning, I’m told to go to France Pare Brise in Lisieux which if you don’t know is an car glass specialist. They tell me because my Volkswagen is a ten year old car they’ll have to order the glass in …a week to ten days. After a number of phone calls including to the insurance company, wasting the whole of Wednesday I find out no where in the whole of North West France has the replacement glass I need. Great, we’re only staying a week and it’s a five hour drive home.

Now baring in mind, we have a right hand drive car on right hand drive French roads and seeing out the window wasn’t easy, let alone being able to see the mirror. Not to mention the vehicle was not secure, so leaving it unattended was somewhat risky. My insurance told me if the car was unattended resulting in damage or theft it would not be covered by the policy.


Thursday evening we had dinner in Vimoutiers with the car parked outside the restaurant from where Monsieur Club was taken. Friday we took a chance and made our way to Honfleur with the Leica M-P. Parked in a secure car park, without a ticket the car couldn’t leave the area.

Thankfully we returned to find the car untouched.

Saturday we went back to Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei which is a very tiny scenic village and Sunday for a drive in the Normandie countryside shooting landscapes with the Nikon F60. After a 350 mile very noisy drive back home and once I get my hearing back I will develop the rolls of Tri-X I shot of French landscapes.

I should of posted this two weeks ago but with so much going on at home I completely forgot about it …my excuse, I got tied up building a new computer.

So the Leica MP, some say that MP stands for Mechanical perfection and Leica promotes this camera as the “the ultimate tool” …I just say it’s great knowing that there’s nothing like the feeling of a brand new Leica camera in your hands.

The MP which has been in Leica’s stable for nineteen years now, yes I couldn’t believe it that this rangefinder was released in 2003 and retail sales are still strong for this camera. Mine is a 2021 example from the holy city of Wetzlar and I opted for the Chrome version over the black paint. This was not only because everyone seems to have a black MP but reading reviews the black paint finish is designed to look brassed over time with use. I decided I didn’t want another Leica looking the way as my M240 M-P has already started to brass, in some areas quite badly, in other places the black paint has gone dull which to me doesn’t look great some how with a modern Leica body.

Think part of this might be to do with using alcoholic hand gel during the pandemic, before as a demonstrator at the Leica store London and since I’ve used the camera. Note the minor brassing on the Summilux focusing ring as well. I found after using the gel, my hands look black after handling the camera.

One thing I have noticed using this camera is how much heavier it is compared to the M4-2 and the M6. The brass top place and bottom do make a difference in weight over the M4 and 6 zinc body parts but not quite as much as the M3 body. I always liked the M3 wind on lever, not so much the M4-2 and M6 plastic levers. In your hands the MP lever feels right some how. My only complaint is as many have remarked, I wished they made the ISO dial on the back out of metal and not plastic. Changing the film speed I have found a little tricky to change, being small with large fingers the dial is very stiff to turn. Whether or not it’s because it’s new only time will tell.

I found the camera is like the M3 but with a light meter plus extra framelines and the film loading speed of the M4-2. I’m not fazed by the rewind knob having used my late father’s M3 although I will say it does take longer to rewind 36 exposures. The MP’s meter is very accurate and unlike other centre weighted meters it is virtually a spot meter. As Leica describe it the meter has a diameter of 12 mm that corresponds to 13% of the full film format or approx. 2/3 of the short side of the applicable bright line frame in the viewfinder. There no excuse for getting exposure wrong here and the meter coped well with the shots below. I found I stopped using my Weston Euro Master meter after a while with this camera which is great for those days you only want to take out just a small camera and a roll of film.

All in all if your fortunate enough to own one I don’t think you’ll regret the purchase and with any luck should out last me!

Rushenden

Out and about with the F60 again, I visited an area the other afternoon which is actually called ‘Ladies Hole Point’ but I decided not to use that name for this post for obvious reasons. Funny how there is some curious place names around Britain and I find it fascinating how they come about.

Found just west of the village of Rushenden, near Queenborough, Isle of Sheppey. Ladies Hole Point wharf is a disused railway jetty and was used for coal washing at one time and later operated by Queenborough Rolling Mill Company. Sadly the site has long since closed and the two cranes, railway lines have been long since removed.

There is only industrial containers and two mobile cranes on the old railway pier used by a marine engineering company. I believe there was also a glue works and a shipbreaking yard here which the old metal was then moved by rail the Queenborough Rolling Mill.

Keep off!

Now having got film developing off to a fine art now without causing disruption to the wife in the kitchen, plus found I quite enjoyed shooting landscapes with an single lens reflex, this is something I think I will do more often. I will have drag out my old Nikon FE plus the Nikkor prime lenses I have stashed away.
