Wisdom

Last Friday I spent a day street shooting, while the wife was shopping in Canterbury, England. Standing on the junction of Burgate and Butchery Lane near the Cathedral, this elderly gentleman walked up, stopped, looked up Butchery Lane, I focused. Then he turned to look back down Burgate, just as I pressed the shutter. I was for a moment concerned he might be lost or a little confused but then a woman called to him.

Luckily for me I had focused the Summilux spot on with aperture wide open and later viewing the image on the computer, to my amazement the picture is pin sharp. Indeed I’ve had to do very little to the picture other than a bit of dodge and burn on the buildings behind plus add my copyright at the bottom.

This for me, this has got to be my best image of this year so far.

The storyteller

I was lucky with this shot. I’d taken a few images of people sitting outside this public house in Faversham, England on market day and as the sun had made an appearance I couldn’t clearly see what I had captured. Later, having got home I found this one which I thought was ideal with the gentlemen’s mouth wide open to the right and the woman covering her eyes from the sunlight.

I shot the images with the Summilux wide open, ISO 200 using my Leica M-P (Typ 240) and using a B+W Neutral Density 2 x Stop filter.

Retirement

Taken on another very warm day in Arromanches-les-Bains, France, 2020

Moments after I took the shot our dog Charlie barge in to make a fuss and luckily for me they where very accommodating to him but didn’t notice me taking pictures.

The Clarinetist

Must apologise to people who follow me, I been so snowed under with the house renovation work and moving that I lost touch with time.

Honfleur, France – August 2020.

Funny how you remember days like this one. My wife and I where trying to find somewhere to eat out on the harbour front in Honfleur and with Covid restrictions relaxed in France last August, you wouldn’t have realised there was any social distancing rules going on at all! Every outside table was full and with the temperature up in the nineties, we really wanted to be outdoors as many of these great restaurants unfortunately do not have any air conditioning. Making our way through the masses, trying to keep our distance I could hear a what I thought might be a Clarinet being played and eventually found the person standing in the middle of the street playing a very soulful tune.

I had to wait for the right moment to take this image as a some ladies with shopping bags kept standing beside him chatting (bottom right you can still see a bag) but not only that the little girl at the table behind was distracted by his music and looking around to see.

Only after I’d taken the picture did wife point out his face mask below his chin, which for my adds to the image the history of when this was shot.

Merry go round

Honfleur, France August 2020.

Another very warm day in Honfleur. While the children were been boarded onto the vintage carousel, I was watching the parents reactions though my Leica. I love the way this man is watching and waiting for proceedings to start, arm over his head, wearing the ubiquitous face mask under his chin.

Enjoying the day.

Came across this gentlemen having a rest enjoying the day after lockdown restrictions had been eased. Nothing to special, but it made for a pleasing image and shot at Barton Point Coastal park, England.

Taking notice

Street photography in Honfleur, France. As this couple walked past, I barked to get the dog attention and the woman looked at me instead of her Pappion, much to the amusement of the people sitting at the caf’e opposite.

Hats

I shot in Rue de l’Homme de Bois, Honfleur, France. Having seen this couple walking hand in hand up the middle of the street and with their hats it just made for a great picture I had to get.

Strike a Pose

Honfleur, France. Looking up Rue des Lingots, which is a narrow street in the old part of Honfleur, I came across these two oriental tourists. The woman in front of me was taking pictures of her friend with a mobile phone. As she taking images, the other girl was holding various model poses for her friend and both of them totally oblivious to everyone else around them. I also love the look from the man walking up the street, it just completed the picture for me.
